Get out of your comfort zone!

Friday, November 21, 2008

At this point in my trip, I’ve finally “settled” into being on the road and have had a little time to reflect on where I’ve been and what’s ahead.

Sometimes the hardest part of any trip is the first day or two when you get out of your comfort zone, both mentally and physically. I think it’s these first few days that are the most crucial to your enjoyment of the trip, and also crucial to your own self-development. Many people will instantly search for things they’re familiar with, fall into comfortable routines, and do anything to return to “life as normal,” even when they’re away from their normal life. Others embrace their new surroundings and experiences and revel in the fact that things are NOT normal. In my opinion, this latter group will get so much more from their travel experiences, and will return home feeling refreshed, expanded, and have a new perspective on life.

As I settle into my own vagabonding experience, trying to find a balance between comfort and adventure, I’m reminded that it sometimes takes a very conscious push to leave your comfort zone. Once out, however, the world is yours for the taking.

If it’s been a while since you’ve left your own comfort zone, do something this week to get a little uncomfortable!
